Definition
Essential Journals, basically is journals that
students, either from Library, Museum, and/or Art field uses in order to do
research for their papers and eventually their own journals. It is also a good
way for artists do their own research. People in general can enjoy what is
being published.
Why Is It Important?
Like I mentioned above, it is a good way for
students to be able to do their research for their papers, for the artists to
be able to keep track on what is new out there and who is doing what, as well
as people reading for their own pleasure.
To be able to access these journals, they can be
able to find information quickly. The good thing about these journals is that
we can get paper version and online version. For some journals, they only will
be available electronically
Primary Users
From what I can see, the primary users is students
so that means the colleges and universities, across the country needs to be
able to have some journals available online and in person for them to be able
to access for their research. There are
some journals that I believe is important for students to be able to use and
access.
- Art Documentation
- Art Monthly
- Smithsonian
- Archives of American Art Journal
History/Background
- Art Libraries Society of North America (NRLIS/NA) and University of Chicago Press publish Art Documentation. It has been going on since 1982. They have been published twice a year, (May & October) electronically via JSTOR. It has articles and information that are related to art librarianship and visual resources curatorship. Its mission is to encourage people to discuss issues that are related to the documentation of art and the practice and theory. It ranges from art and architecture librarianship, digital image management, and technology related to: visual arts, art publishing, artists’ books, and more. To be able to access the information, you can be a member of NRLIS; it comes included. [1][2]
- It is more like a magazine but I feel it is relevant just because of the information alone. It is United Kingdom’s leading magazine. They are well known for their contemporary visual art information. They published the magazine ten times a year. It has everything from in death features, interviews with leading artists, profiles on rising stars, and up to the minute coverage of trends from independent critics. They also have regular columns on artists’ books and multiplies, new media, auction activity, and legal issues. [3]
- It is a monthly magazine. First published in 1970. They do information on science, history, art, popular culture, and innovation. They also add wide range of photos to support their articles. [4]
- First got published in 1960 as Archives of American Art Bulletin. Publishes twice a year, spring and fall. Recently re-launched to incorporate peer-reviewed articles. They are seeking two type of articles – research based with 5-8,000 words (including endnotes) for peer-reviews and short texts of 1-3,000 words (including endnotes) that explore new acquisitions or highlight discoveries in the archives’ collection for non peer-reviews. The journal covers the history of art in American that includes 18th century to now. It also publishes original research that based on the archives’ collections. [5]
Important Issues
There are many issues that I can think of. Will
there be issues for people to access when it is time for them do their
research? Will the journals have enough storage to be able to have the articles
online? Will they have enough printed version to be able to sent out once it is
requested?
