Dear Professor Smith,
I am writing in regards to your inquiry about resources available to you on outsider art and art brut. Below I have listed 10 separate websites that will lead you to current exhibitions, news, and publications to help you get started. I will also briefly state some merits and caveats to look for while browsing these websites. Please be advised that our library subscribes to all of the journals that may be connected to the websites that follow, and you are welcome to browse them at any time. Please let us know if you have any questions, or if we can assist you further!
- Raw Vision
- "Raw Vision" is an international art journal. It provides information about current exhibitions and publications in the world of Outsider Art. While it is an important piece of literature, please be advised that the journal itself is published quarterly, but the website provides current news articles, videos, social media, and other links.
- Intuit: Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art
- The Intuit Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art website provides a look at their current, future, and past exhibitions in the field. The institution also provides a journal, which is only published once a year. However, this website could be used for research into how a successful exhibition may be presented, as well as artists to look into.
- Outsider Art Fair
- The Outsider Art Fair website provides links to their gallery and exhibitions. Most importantly, their link to "Articles and Reviews" show different links to outside sources that reference outsider art and art brut. The website is in the style of a tumblr blog.
- Out of Art
- As their website states: "Out of Art is a multimedia platform with news and background on Outsider Art as part of the contemporary art". The magazine this platform produces comes out twice a year, but their website provides current news. While this is a Dutch and English source, the translations are comprehensive.
- Arts Journal
- Arts Journal is a broad website that provides many outsourced links to arts news from around the world. By simply searching their website, you can pull up many current news sources.
- Collectie de Stadshof
- The Collectie de Stadshof is a Dutch institution that collects and exhibits outsider art. The website is available in both Dutch and English (the English link is provided). News is provided as well as their collection and artists with which the institution has worked.
- aBCD
- A warning- while this website provides much information, the English translation website is "under construction". Therefore, google translate or a knowledge of the French language is helpful! Many articles are provided for the user, as well as expositions, collections, publications, and even films.
- American Folk Art Museum
- The American Folk Art Museum is focused on providing public access to outsider art. They have a link to resources, as well as their library and archives website; publications, such as their Folk Art Magazine; and more! Browse their collections and exhibitions for an extensive look at their holdings.
- outsiderart.info
- OutsiderArt.info is a website where the artists submit their work. The administrator views the works and work that is approved is shared. While this may seem somewhat subjective and unscholarly, it is actually a big part of what outsider art is all about. Undiscovered and unknown artists are given exposure and make the front page of this varying and undiscerning website.
- Collection de l'Art Brut Lausanne
- (This website is in French with English translation, English translation link provided). The collection of Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland has an extensive website, showing not only collections and exhibitions, but also news, references, and other links (such a similar museums, magazines to view, blogs, etc). This website can be a great resource and jumping off point, as well as a view into another example of outsider art exhibitions from around the world.
Again, thank you for your interest in our resources. Please let us know if there are any issues with links, or questions you may have about the resources that we did not answer. We look forward to working with you and seeing your future exhibition!
Regards,
Kady Fortier
